Rude Reaction: Shoppers Clash Over Checkout Queue Etiquette

The grocery store express lane guarantees quick service, yet during this usual visit, it fell short of providing ease.

When a shopper refused to give up their spot in line to a woman behind them with less items, it left the woman ranting about bad manners.

You'll definitely want to keep reading for this.

Am I wrong for not letting someone cut in line who had fewer items than me?

I went to the supermarket to grab some weekly essentials and found myself in one of those "10 items or fewer" quick-checkout lines.

I had precisely 10 items — nothing big, just essentials such as eggs, bread, and so on.

Pretty normal trip.

However, that's when the journey unexpectedly took a strange turn.

Just as I start placing my items on the conveyor belt, a woman standing behind me (probably in her mid-40s) sort of leans forward and asks if she could go ahead of me because she only has two items.

I checked, and yes, she only had a few minor items.

This turned out to be more complicated than it initially appeared, however.

However, the fact remains that I had already begun unloading, and there were also two more people waiting behind her, making the queue far from being vacant.

I just said, “Oh sorry, I already started,” and kept unloading.

I wasn't being impolite or anything, I simply kept it brief.

The woman wasn’t planning to let this go unaddressed.

She remained silent but expressed her frustration with an overly dramatic sigh and began grumbling about "the disappearance of courtesy" and "people lacking morals."

The individual standing behind her gave an uncomfortable smile, as if they were hesitant to intervene.

However, subsequently, they started to question whether they you were the antagonist in this tale.

I checked out, left, and didn’t think much of it until later that night when I told a friend the story.

They were like, “Dude, you should’ve just let her go — it would’ve taken like 30 seconds.” Which, yeah, maybe?

Meanwhile, they continued to feel that their choice was warranted.

But at the same time, I was already mid-checkout, and it just felt weird to shuffle everything around.

So now I’m sitting here wondering… was I really being that inconsiderate?

I didn't raise my voice or act aggressively; I simply didn't want to halt the checkout process and cause a bigger scene.

AITA?

It turns out that sticking to what's expected of you can still get you into a great deal of trouble.

How did Reddit respond?

There’s also merit in having someone who expects A total unknown person to abandon all commitments to cater to their requirements.

This woman is someone who could lecture on "impolite behavior."

When dealing with such entitlement, it's wise to avoid giving them attention altogether.

According to the store, having 10 items is still regarded as "just a few things."

This customer declined to delay the queue, yet that did not stop the person standing behind them from harboring resentment.

It turns out patience wasn't something this woman had on her shopping list.
