According to the latest information provided by the College Board, the top 50 public high schools in New Jersey ranked by SAT scores all achieved an average composite score (which includes both Reading/Writing and Math sections) exceeding 1200 points out of a maximum of 1600.
At the top of the rankings are Edison Academy Magnet School and High Technology High School in Monmouth County, each boasting combined SAT scores above 1500. These institutions are closely trailed by four selective high schools—Woodbridge Academy Magnet School, Biotechnology High School, Bergen County Academies, and Union County Magnet High School—which reported combined SAT scores between 1480 and 1448. Given their rigorous admissions processes, these schools generally achieve higher average SAT scores compared to nearby public high schools.
The top ten "general admission" high schools based on their highest SAT scores include: Millburn High School (1,382), West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North (1,354), John P. Stevens High School (1,319), Montgomery High School (1,317), West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South (1,308), Livingston High School (1,301), Princeton High School (1,296), Tenafly High School (1,295), Highland Park High School (1,287), and Ridge High School (1,283).
Although being enrolled in one of these prestigious high schools can make your college application stand out, it also comes with challenges. In the admission process, colleges evaluate candidates against their counterparts who have access to similar educational resources. Consequently, the standards tend to be much more stringent at institutions where students compete intensely with each other academically.
In addition, even students earning top SAT scores in comparison to their peers may find the college admissions process to be incredibly competitive. Five popular colleges and universities in New Jersey report an impressive range of SAT scores for their student body: Princeton University (1500-1580), Stevens Institute of Technology (1370-1500), Rutgers University (1270-1480), NJIT (1210-1478), and The College of New Jersey (1140-1340).
Students from New Jersey who decide to venture beyond the borders of the Garden State for highly selective universities nationwide may discover that exceptional SAT scores can be extremely advantageous. Within the Ivy League, prestigious schools such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania typically see middle-range SAT scores between 1500 and 1580 among their applicants.
Even institutions one step down still maintain rigorous standards. For instance, admitted students at Carnegie Mellon typically score between 1500-1570 on their SATs; those entering NYU achieve similar marks ranging from 1480-1570. Meanwhile, prospective students aiming for Boston College should aim for a score of around 1430-1540, whereas applicants to Boston University generally get between 1400-1520. At Georgetown University, successful candidates usually obtain an SAT score within the range of 1390-1550.
Naturally, these students are anticipated to maintain an outstanding GPA, stellar AP test scores across various disciplines, along with exceptional extracurricular pursuits.
