Samsung DeX has consistently been a hallmark feature of Samsung devices. This capability transforms your mobile device into an apparatus reminiscent of a desktop computing environment. Currently, Google seems to be adopting a similar strategy. Ever since Android 14, the firm has been discreetly developing its own desktop mode for Pixel gadgets.
In the Developer Preview of Android 15 for the Pixel Tablet, a "desktop windowing" capability was unveiled. By the time Android 16 rolled around, this functionality had been refined and is now referred to as "Enable desktop experience features." We owe our first practical glimpse into how this operates largely to Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority.
Android 16 Desktop Mode
Rahman managed to get the feature running on a Pixel 8 Pro connected to a laptop. The Android desktop interface has a taskbar at the bottom, complete with three-button navigation on the right.
The taskbar displays your recently used applications as well, and indeed, you have the ability to open several apps in a split-screen mode. This feature works similarly to what you would find on traditional desktop computers.
A swipe down from the top opens a quick access menu. This layout features the usual Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles with options to add more or remove them from the menu.
The battery icon appears in the top-right corner of the home screen, whereas the time is shown in the upper-left section. This layout closely mirrors what you'd find in a typical desktop interface, which appears to be intentional. Additionally, you have the ability to continue using your phone even with the desktop mode activated.
This feature may appear practical now, but it’s not yet complete. According to Rahman, it remains under development and "will almost definitely miss the initial Android 16 stable version." The rollout could potentially happen during one of the forthcoming quarterly Android 16 update releases, as mentioned by Rahman.
