HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WAFF President Donald Trump’s budget proposal for 2026 plans to terminate certain NASA initiatives, affecting even those based in the Rocket City.
Trump’s new federal budget proposes $163 billion in total cuts for 2026. The budget takes $6 billion in funding away from NASA, in a cheaper effort to beat China back to the Moon and be the first ones to Mars.
A portion of the proposal involves "decommissioning" NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which was designed for the mission to send humans back to the moon. Under the Trump administration's plan, both the SLS rocket and the Orion Crew Capsule would be discontinued following two additional Artemis missions.
The statement indicates that the SLS rocket, created and developed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, comes with an exorbitant price tag of more than $4 billion per launch and exceeds its initial budget by 140%.
They think that lower-cost systems could enable more significant and less postponed space missions, helping the U.S. outpace China’s return to the Moon, whilst also freeing up resources for their mission to send the inaugural human expedition to Mars.
WAFF 48 contacted Congressman Dale Strong, who then issued a statement stating,
Since arriving in Washington, I have seized every chance to champion North Alabama and highlight our region's pivotal role at the intersection of technological advancement, space exploration, and national defense. As the Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittee, I ensure that North Alabama has a voice during the yearly budget discussions. The vital work conducted at Marshall Space Flight Center within our district plays an essential part in NASA's key initiatives and helps maintain America's position as a frontrunner in space technology and discovery.
Dale Strong, (R) Alabama's 5th Congressional District
WAFF 48 has reached out to the Marshall Space Flight Center, lawmakers, those with Boeing and Lockheed, and others in the space community on how these proposed cuts would impact the,m but have not heard back.
